Decked Builder - Mobile Apps for MTG

Erik Karolus wrote in on April 25th asking: "I'm using Decked Lite on an IPod touch. it would be great if I could select an option to download all of the HD art overnight or something. Maybe add that as a pay option, to help offset the hosting costs of many people making big downloads?"

I thought that was a very interesting proposal, thanks for the great suggestion Erick!

Our bandwidth costs are already up to nearly 1 terabyte a month serving up HD card art and rising all the time, which is a major reason why we have not implemented an option to download all of the HD art offline. Each download of the entire collection of HD art would probably consume approximately 2-3 gb of bandwidth as well, not to mention the same amount of space on your device.

Collecting a nominal fee for allowing the offline caching of the entire HD card art collection is an interesting proposal to help us offset the bandwidth costs. Does a $2.99 fee make sense for this option? The fee would be to allow multiple downloads of the card art in case you run Decked Builder on multiple devices. It would also be for up to a year, to allow you to download HD art for new sets as well. Write in to support@deckedbuilder.com or post below to let us know your opinion. Thanks!

I think it's a good idea, and the fee it's ok for me.
Comparing the value of the material I would say that is a fair compromise.
Great! I can't wait for this option!

04/26/2011 07:29

How about just cache the non HD art? And if it cached HD art it could be just the art of a single deck, series, etc.

04/26/2011 12:54

I think that this is a great idea! I would not complain about paying the fee to have this option! It would be nice to have the option for caching the entire non-HD art in the full edition also. Its a good idea for those who uses ipod touch like me and likes to use it offline! If it compromises the bandwidth, maybe it would be nice to have an option to cach the prices update at least.

I would be willing to pay the fee to download the art.

I personally have all of the HD art on my PC from using Magic Workstation, therefore this option isn't that appealing to me. So, might I suggest an option to import the card art yourself also be included?

Other notes...

In the comments of your 03/26/11 post I had asked about an EDH/Commander deck format layout, in order to keep your general separate from the rest of the deck. Is this at all possible?

Also, will the Planechase and Archenemy card sets be supported eventually?

Loving the app! Keep up the good work!

Why You don't use the images of gather? Are in good quality and are all in the same quality, and why you don't add the special editions? like archenemy or duel decks?

Love the idea. Definitely interested!

Yes, $2.99 sounds like a perfectly reasonable price, and would be useful not only for Decked, but also MWS, Magic Album and similar software. I’d buy it.

I would totally be willing to pay $2.99 to be able to cache all of the card art on my iPad. I have a Wi-fi only iPad and the ability to be able to use this app when I'm not in a Wi-fi zone would be awesome, even if it only lasted for a year afterward. What would it cost to get future sets after the one year ran out? Would it be another $2.99? Or would you just do a $.99 charge for an extra year of downloading?

Great idea. I would support it with my purchase for sure.

Love the app, love the HD art,
great idea, fee no problem !

I'd be willing to pay $3 for the art, but it should include all sets (full art promos, precons, FNM promos, etc.)

However, like Jim suggested, why not just cache the art that's already been downloaded? Seems like a win/win, we get art and you save on bandwidth.

I love using Decked for my Ipod, it's simply THE best App for all your MTG needs. Only thing lacking is a counter but there are plenty of these out there.

I spent a good couple of hours going through every single card of the latest block all the way down to a few sets before M11. This is because since I do use an Ipod touch, I do not always have access to internet. Also, 90% of the time I would want to use Decked is when I'm somewhere where Internet is not often an option such as card shops or buddies houses.

Being able to download all of the art would be a great feature for those of us that do use Ipods for this app. As much as I love HD art, I don't see a huge need for it and it does take up extra space. I'd like to see two options, one fo downloading all art and one for all HD art.

I also liked what one person mentioned about just being able to download a whole set at once. If you don't want to make it a download all option, at least a download set option would be amazing.

Now I'm never thrilled to be spending money. I can understand how making download all HD art should be an extra fee. Though if you do this, I think a download all regular art should be available for free. Or once again, downloading sets at a time to help save bandwidth.

P.S.

I would LOVE to see special edition decks listed in a category to search through. Archenemy, Planeswalker, special edition...Nothing worse than being at a store, looking at these decks and not remembering whats in them. Even worse is realizing you could of got some good single out of one deck but you chose the wrong one.

I think this would be an amazing addition to Decked. Making card buying easier.

I'd pay, but yeah it'd have to be for all sets, including new ones (but it's cool if it's a per-year thing).

Great idea! I would gladly pay the $3 to have the HD art of all cards in my Macbook.

I would pay to have this app for PC/Android. You guys make the best magic cataloging software for mobile devices. Period.

Hey! Your app is really great. But i don't understand why there is no card number search. For instance, i know that i need the card #n from the set X. I know name of card (or i can find it) but it is much faster to add this card by collection number. And it helps people who has cards in different languages. So they don't need to spend a lot of time to find other way to this card in your app.

Can You take the digital form of the cards like Gather? In Gather aren't scan! And are all in same quality....and put the promo too!

I would Pay a fee, but Not more than 0.99$
The App Itself is pretty expensive for an Student And Then paying again 3$ for just downloading ist idioty...

Lando

I would pay a small nominal fee (.99) if there were 2 options:
1. I could choose what sets to download for
2. I could choose SD or HD art

Best App ever! Got no problems with the fee, just want all HD Card Arts as soon as possible. I don't think it's to expensive. If you can buy lots of Magic Cards you can buy this too. :D

How many GB do all the HD Card Arts together take?

And as always: Have A Nice Day!

Tan Thor Jen

@iSergiant Right now, nearly 4gb

Daeran

I think the option will be great but just for 0,99$.

Jon

If the cache were incremental (so that I could 'just' download the M13 art, for example) then it would be a great feature. Personally I would not want the whole collection if it's 2-3GB as space would become an issue. Also, most people in the UK have limited bandwidth from their providers.

It kind of feels like the service should be included in the app, but I would happily pay to unlock the feature as server costs are clearly an issue. I imagine most MTG fans would too!

As Daeran said, a 99c rate might allow for more subscribers if it's feasible on your side. Especially as there are already IAPs in the app for collection support.

Stop doing the monetize thing, I paid for the app. Make it so we can use MWS image data, this will save you bandwidth while pleasing those of us who don't want to deal with on-the-fly image grabbing and find the lack of a configurable local image DB a glaring design oversight.

Also don't do this just for iPad, there should be no differences between platform versions that would make your Android user base second class citizens.

I'd totally be up for this as a pay option, as well as a stand-alone collection app. I haven't used the deck building function of this app yet, but I love the collection part; I'd die for an expanded stand-alone version!!

I would pay to have it on the MacBook. Not on the iPad though, it'd take too much space.

I love the app, and I'd love to have a way to bulk download HD card art for my favorite sets. I would be very willing to pay a nominal fee for additional downloads. Its great to sit at work on a lunch break viewing cards and building decks right for my droid.

Is this idea still alive? I use both the mac and the ipad app and would pay the 2.99 for the hd cards. For some people is this a little expensive though, but i understand that 0.99 would probably not make for your bandwidth costs. Why not something in between, like 1.50? And if we could choose, which sets to download, that would be even better. Please, tell us if you're still considering this idea.

T3
01/30/2013 10:52

they don't own images, fear WoC would have issue with redistribution so it's a rightly dead feature. The images are stored by MVID, just download one of the existing image collections used for MWS, rename the files and put them in the cache by hand. I've already done this myself for both DB & DD on my Android.

Tan Thor Jen
01/30/2013 06:50

@etnag Our biggest fear is a PR mess if we do release such a paid feature, so we are quite hesitant to do it.
